5 Finance Movies You Must Watch

When talking about movies, we all know about Romantic, Action, Entertainment and Comedy types of film. All these genres are quite common among people. But do you know that there are some astounding movies made on the topic of Finance as well? Finance is a broad term that is defined as the management of money and includes activities associated with banking, debt, credit, capital markets, money, investments, etc. The movies which we are about to share are a must-watch for financial experts, prospective financial professionals and for every individual who is passionate about watching movies. Doesn’t matter even if you don’t want to make a career in finance, these films can provide an insight into the world of finance.

Here is the list of the 5 best movies on Finance that one must watch:

1. Wall Street

Wall Street is a 1987 American drama film which popularized the phrase “Greed is good”. The film tells the story of Bud Fox (played by Charlie Sheen), a young and impatient stockbroker who is willing to do anything to get to the top, including trading on illegal inside information taken through a wealthy, ruthless and greedy corporate raider Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas), who takes the youth under his wing. What many people don’t know is that Oliver Stone’s (director and co-writer of the movie) father was a stockbroker during the Great Depression, and he made the movie in tribute to him.

Wall Street is an undisputed finance classic for a reason. It is the most influential film about the stock market. It is the number one finance movie everyone must see.

2. Baazaar

Baazaar (in English, Market) is a 2018 Indian film, set in the backdrop of money, power and business, largely based on the stock market. The movie introduces us to ideas like insider trading, media manipulations, political rigging with great ease, even for the inexperienced. It plays up the idea of morals over money or vice versa. One of the highlights of the film is Saif Ali Khan’s performance. Here is the famous dialogue from the movie — “Note ka maalik banne ke liye usse kamana padta hai.” (You have to earn money to become the owner of it.)

Baazaar is sharp, edgy and engulfs you into the big bad world of stock exchange trading & manipulation. It will leave you entertained thoroughly.

3. The Ascent of Money

The Ascent of Money is a 2008 television documentary adapted from the book “The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World” by Harvard professor Niall Ferguson. It won an International Emmy Award in 2009. It examines the long history of money, credit, and banking. It traces how money has grown from a tool to be able to trade goods and services more easily, to a dominating factor in society.

If you want to know how money has transformed the world we live in, watch this film. This is a rewarding watch and gives a deepened perspective on how and why our modern societies are structured and behave as they do.

4. The Wolf of Wall Street

The Wolf of Wall Street is a 2013 American biographical black comedy crime film. It is based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, from his rise to a wealthy stockbroker living the high life to his fall involving crime, corruption and the federal government. This film showcases greed, drugs and a lavish lifestyle in the most extreme and ridiculous ways.

The Wolf of Wall Street is the craziest movie I’ve ever watched. There’s no word to describe this film other than insane. If you haven’t seen this movie, then you are missing out on some of the best performances of Leonardo DiCaprio.

5. The Big Short

The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film. It is based on the non-fiction book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” by Michael Lewis. This movie follows a few finance experts as they observe the instability in the US housing market in 2006–07, and predict its collapse. Through their research, they discover the flaws and corruption in the system. The film is noted for the unconventional techniques it employs to explain complex financial instruments.

The Big Short is a dramatic retelling of the 2007–08 financial crisis and reveals a riveting world of chaos, corruption & misfits. It is worth the time invested.
